Indiana Dunes National Park

After Jim's early morning work appointment in Kalamazoo, we were on our way to visit our 20th national park - Indiana Dunes National Park. We started our visit at the Dorothy Buell Visitor where we learned that many of the national park hiking trails had been closed that morning due to a chemical spill in Lake Michigan from a factory in nearby Gary, Indiana. We were able to drive to the Century of Progress homes that had been a part of the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago. When the World's Fair was over, five of the homes were moved to Indiana Dunes and are now part of the national park. After seeing the homes, we made our way to Indiana Dunes State Park. Luckily, the state park had not closed their trails, so we started with the 3 Dune Challenge. It was a pretty 1.5 mile hike that took us to the tops of Mt. Jackson, Mt. Holden, and Mt. Tom. Following our hike, we had a picnic lunch before wandering around the beach access area. Since there wasn't much more we could do with most of the national park being closed, we decided to start the long drive north toward Mackinaw City.

The sign has not been updated since Indiana Dunes was reclassified from a National Lakeshore to a National Park in 2019.
